Relocation Guide

Moving to
El Paso

Your complete moving checklist — from 8 weeks out to your first week in the Sun City. Utilities, registration, schools, neighborhoods, and everything you need to settle in.

Before You Move

Pre-Move Timeline

A structured timeline keeps your move on track. Start early, especially if buying a home — the typical El Paso closing takes 30 to 45 days.

8 Weeks Before

Research El Paso neighborhoods and school districts. Get pre-approved for a mortgage. Contact ProGen Real Estate at (915) 691-1082 to start your home search. Request moving quotes from at least 3 companies. If PCS to Fort Bliss, file your travel orders and contact TMO for moving arrangements.

4 Weeks Before

Confirm your moving company and dates. Notify your current utility providers of disconnection dates. Start packing non-essentials. Forward your mail through USPS. Gather important documents — birth certificates, medical records, school transcripts, pet vaccination records. Notify your employer, bank, and insurance of the address change.

1 Week Before

Pack an essentials box — medications, chargers, toiletries, snacks, water bottles (critical for desert driving), important documents, and a change of clothes. Defrost your freezer. Confirm utility connection dates at your new El Paso address. Download offline maps for the drive if crossing through areas with limited cell service (common in west Texas).

First Week

Set Up Your New Life

Utilities, vehicle registration, and essential services you need to set up within your first week in El Paso.

El Paso Electric

(915) 543-5970

Set up electricity service. El Paso Electric is the sole provider. You can start service online at epelectric.com or by phone. Allow 1 to 2 business days for connection. Summer bills average $150 to $250 for a 2,000 sq ft home due to heavy AC use.

El Paso Water Utilities

(915) 594-5500

Water, sewer, and trash collection are handled by El Paso Water Utilities (EPWU). Apply online or visit their office at 1154 Hawkins Blvd. Bring a photo ID and proof of address. Water is metered — desert conservation means tiered pricing. Average bill: $60 to $90/month.

Texas DMV / Vehicle Registration

El Paso County Tax Office

You have 30 days after establishing residency to register your vehicle in Texas. Visit the El Paso County Tax Office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and a passing Texas vehicle inspection. Registration costs $50 to $75. You will also need a Texas driver's license — visit any DPS office with proof of identity, Social Security card, and two proofs of residency.

El Paso Natural Gas (Texas Gas Service)

(800) 700-2443

Natural gas is provided by Texas Gas Service. Set up service before move-in, especially in winter — El Paso can drop below freezing in December through February. Gas is used for heating, water heaters, and some ranges. Average winter bill: $40 to $80/month.
